しかし、コンビニの品揃えと、高齢者の実際の生活で必要となるもののあいだには、乖離がある。これは、コンビニのメインターゲットが二十代や三十代の男性である以上どうしようもないことだ。一口に「生活に必要なもの一式」っつったって、独身男性と老夫婦のそれではまったく違うわけだ。そこを埋めようと、いま各チェーンは努力している。その努力はよくわかるんだが……一度「欲しいものがある」という体験をしてしまった年寄りはなかなかに頑固だ。こんなにたくさんあるんだから、なんでもできるだろう、一足飛びに思考がそこまで行く。 　こうして、紅差し筆はないかとか、シュークリームの中身のクリームだけ売ってくれないかパンにつけて食うからとか、クリーニングはやってないのかとか、電気料金の督促が来たんでどうしたらいいんだとか、多種多様な要望が店には寄せられる。 　これ、ひとつには品揃えの問題なんだけど、もうひとつはシステム的な問題だったりする。順番にレジに並ぶことができなくて、売場で金払おうとするじーさんとか、まあ収納代行でもそうだよね。「コンビニに行けば払える」っていうことになるから、払込用紙なんか持ってこなかったりもする。おじいちゃん、バーコードのある紙がないとできないのよ、おうそのバーコードってのはなんだい、それはねこういうものなのよ、おう、それ捨てちまったい。捨てんなよ。
